Frequently Asked Questions About Your Session

What do I need to do to prepare for my session?

To help your session run smoothly and make it a fun experience for you and your pet, I encourage you arrive at least fifteen (15) minutes prior to our shoot to allow your pet to familiarize himself with the surroundings. Exercise goes a long way in burning off that nervous energy, so consider a short walk or game of fetch, or review some basic commands; just be sure not too tire your pup out too much.

Your dog will photograph best if groomed within a few days of his session. A clean well-fitting collar that complements your dog’s coloring and your clothing also photographs nicely.

Don’t forget to bring along your dog’s favorite toys or treats. Whether your dog is food-motivated or rocks an adorable head tilt at the squeak of a ball, play goes a long way in bringing out your pup’s personality.

What happens at my pre-session consultation?

Your pre-session consultation is held over the phone. During this time, I will get to know your dog’s personality, including what gets his tail wagging, what drives him bonkers, and what I need to do to create a safe and enjoyable experience for both you and your pet. We will also talk about session expectations and address any additional questions or concerns that you may have regarding what to wear, how to prepare, and ways to display your images.

My dog isn’t an obedient school superstar and doesn’t do well off-leash; can you still get great photos?

Absolutely! In fact, some of the most fun and fetching shots happen when dogs are just being dogs. Sure, it is helpful to know basic commands, but it is certainly not essential. No matter how obedient (or disobedient) your dog is, you’ll walk away from your session with a range of creative, personality-filled shots. Don’t let the worry of your dog’s behavior deter you from booking a session; there are countless techniques (and patience) I use to bring out the best in your furry friend.

As for leashes, almost every dog I photograph is leashed for safety and I provide complimentary leash removal during post-processing. If your dog will be wearing a leash to your session, I simply recommend a thin, neutral/black-colored lead. Harnesses are not recommended as they can be extremely challenging (and sometimes impossible) to remove in post-processing.

Where will my session take place?

That’s entirely up to you! If you think you have the perfect spot in mind, I’d love to hear! If you have no idea, don’t sweat it. I can offer some pet-friendly suggestions based on the feel and style you desire for your session. I really enjoy shooting on-location, but I can easily come to your home or backyard as well, if that's where you believe your pet will feel more at ease in front of the camera.

How long will my session last?

Most sessions average one hour. Some dogs may require more time, some may need less. We will work until we have a variety of diverse shots and always at your pet's pace to ensure he is comfortable, relaxed, and enjoying our time together.

My dog is older or terminally ill; can we still do a session?

Absolutely! Rainbow Sessions are reserved specifically for pets preparing to cross the Rainbow Bridge due to illness or aging. Due to their nature, Rainbow Sessions are given scheduling priority and can be held on-location or in the privacy of your home or backyard. Please contact me directly for information regarding Rainbow Sessions collections and scheduling.

What happens after my session?

Roughly 2-3 weeks following your session we'll get together for your big reveal and in-person ordering appointment. I love this part because there's nothing more rewarding to me than seeing my clients' faces as they view the photos of their pet(s) for the first time--and there's special treats for you and your pet!

At this time, we will narrow down your favorite images together, talk about how you wish to feature them in your home, and finalize those must-have images and products. From there, your custom artwork order is placed for you to enjoy for years to come.

Do you only photograph dogs?

While dogs are my specialty and my absolute favorite, I do occasionally photograph cats and other pets, so don't be shy about inquiring. I'd love the opportunity to photograph your four-legged friend!

What types of payment do you take?

I currently accept cash, personal checks, PayPal, and credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, Discover, and American Express). All checks must clear before the session date and before any products are ordered or delivered. There is a $35 fee for returned checks.

What is your cancellation or rescheduling policy?

I understand that unexpected things happen. While your session fee is non-refundable, should we need to cancel due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances, we will work together to reschedule your shoot for a mutually agreed upon future date.

Clients who fail to show or who cancel their session one calendar day or less before the session date will forfeit their session fee.

In the unlikely event that your dog passes away prior to our session, your session fee will be refunded.

How do I book?

Give me a call at 724-913-BARK (2275) or use the convenient form located under Contact Me. In order to secure your session date and time, your non-refundable full session fee is due in advance of your session.

How does my pet say cheese?

Each dog says "cheese" in his own way, whether he be a diva, thrill-seeker, loyal companion, or rowdy romper. Take this fun quiz to see what type of session style may suit him best!
