I first met Uschi and her mom Abby just over a year ago when they joined me for a limited edition studio session I hosted as a fundraiser for Hello Bully. Uschi was only a few month old when I did her first series of photos back in October 2018 and she knocked it out of the park, so when her mom reached out to book a full session for her this past October, I was thrilled to work with them again.
Now 16-months-old, Uschi is quite the little spitfire and everything I love about working with puppies! She is feisty, sweet, curious, and energetic, everything her mom loves most about the breed and everything I wanted to bring to her photos.
“I’ve been obsessed with dachshunds since my first run-in with them 10 years ago at a pet store,” recalls Abby. “They’re so spunky and funny! [The] first chance I had to move into a dog-friendly apartment, getting Uschi was a no-brainer.”
And how about that name? This Uschi is the first one I’ve ever met and I was totally intrigued by its origin and why Abby chose it.
“I wanted to pick a German name to honor her breed heritage. I found Uschi buried in an online list. It’s short for Ursula, which means “little bear,” explains Abby. She told me that many of her favorite physical traits of Uschi’s included her eyeliner eyes, her smile that she said doesn’t come out often, and her ears.
Because Abby describes Uschi as an “energetic, playful psycho,” I knew getting some fun action shots had to be on my list of must-have portraits. And oh, those sweet high-flying ears!
I also knew that Uschi has a ton of tricks in her arsenal: basics including sit, down, place, up (stand), look at me, heel, as well as more playful ones like up-high (high-ten), boop, and bang/play dead, so you can bet we caught some of those too.
The joy and love between Abby and this little bear is so obvious and so pure. They are such a cute pair too. Check out their adorable matching collar/scrunchie accessories.
Abby met with me a few weeks after her session for her reveal and ordering appointment. We talked through several products she was considering and came up with a custom three-piece gallery-wrapped canvas wall art grouping for her living room and a small digital file collection along with a set of three 3×3 mini accordion albums as her bonus product.
