Frequently Asked Questions About Your Session

What is a pre-session consultation?

Your pre-session consultation is held over the phone. During this time, I will get to know your dog’s personality, including what gets his tail wagging, what drives him bonkers, and what I need to do to create a safe and enjoyable experience for both you and your pet. We will also talk about session expectations, possible locations, and address any additional questions or concerns that you may have regarding what to wear, how to prepare, and ways to display your images.

My dog isn’t an obedient school superstar and doesn’t do well off-leash; can you still get great photos?

Absolutely! In fact, some of the most fun and fetching shots happen when dogs are just being dogs. Sure, it is helpful to know basic commands, but it is certainly not essential. No matter how obedient (or disobedient) your dog is, you’ll walk away from your session with a range of creative, personality-filled shots. As for leashes, almost every dog I photograph is leashed for safety and I provide complimentary leash removal during post-processing.

Awesome! How soon should I book?

Sessions tend to book anywhere from several weeks to four months in advance, so I encourage you to reserve your date as soon as possible.

If your pet needs a session sooner due to illness or aging, I suggest booking a Rainbow Session as these sessions are given priority scheduling whenever possible.

Where will my session take place?

If you have no idea, don’t sweat it! I have a diverse location list that ranges from rustic and rural to urban and I'm happy to offer suggestions based on the feel and style you desire for your session. If you have the perfect spot in mind, I’d love to hear about it.

While I love shooting on-location--the preferred choice for most clients--I can easily come to your home or backyard as well, if that's where you believe your pet will feel more at ease in front of the camera.

How long will my session last?

Most sessions average one hour to 90 minutes. Some dogs may require more time, some may need less. We will work until we have a variety of diverse shots and always at your pet's pace to ensure he is comfortable, relaxed, and enjoying our time together.

Limited edition sessions and Fine Art Pawtrait Sessions typically last 20-30 minutes.

My dog is older or terminally ill; can we still do a session?

Absolutely! Rainbow Sessions are reserved specifically for pets preparing to cross the Rainbow Bridge due to illness or aging. Due to their nature, Rainbow Sessions are given scheduling priority whenever possible and can be held on-location or in the privacy of your home or backyard.

What happens after my session?

Roughly 2-3 weeks following your session we'll get together for your big reveal and in-person ordering appointment. I love this part because there's nothing more rewarding to me than seeing my clients' faces as they view the photos of their pet(s) for the first time--and there are special treats for you and your pet!

At this time, we will narrow down your favorite images together, talk about how you wish to feature them in your home, and finalize those must-have images and products. From there, your custom artwork order is placed for you to enjoy for years to come.

How many images do you typically show?

I believe in quality over quantity and will present you with the best of the best images from your session, generally 20-40. Limited edition sessions and Fine Art Pawtrait Sessions typically yield fewer, closer to 10-15.

The actual number of presented images is based on the length of your session, the number of subjects involved, the variety in our shooting location, the temperament of the pet(s), etc.

Do you only photograph dogs? What about family sessions?

I love when pet parents join in--and I encourage you to jump in at least a few shots--but since my goal is to capture the joy and love between pets and their people, the focus on every session will be on the pet. That said, I do not offer people-only sessions. If you are looking for a people-only family session, please let me know and I can recommend you a professional family photographer.

While dogs are my specialty, I do occasionally photograph cats and horses, so don't be shy about inquiring. I've even photographed a pot-bellied pig! I'd love the opportunity to work with your four-legged friend.

What types of payment do you accept?

I accept cash, personal checks, and all major credit cards for product payment during your reveal and ordering appointment. Your non-refundable session retainer, however, must be paid via debit/credit card upon booking via my private client portal.

What is your cancellation or rescheduling policy?

I understand that unexpected things happen. While your session retainer is non-refundable, should we need to be flexible due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances, we will work together to reschedule your shoot for a mutually agreed upon future date.

In the unlikely event that your dog passes away prior to our session, your session retainer will be refunded.
