There’s something magical about a dog’s pure joy when they experience a true winter wonderland, and Frankie, a spunky miniature schnauzer with a beard to rival Santa’s, proved this tenfold during his snow-filled January session.
His mom and I chose a crisp, cloudy afternoon for Frankie’s session. The fresh snowfall blanketed the ground, creating a pristine backdrop that made Frankie’s salt-and-pepper coat look like he’d been dipped in monochrome perfection.
As soon as his paws hit the snow, he was off—bounding through drifts like an Olympic snow hurdler, occasionally stopping to stick his face in the snowbank and reemerge looking like a canine powdered doughnut.
Somewhere between snow diving and rolling, Frankie discovered the art of snowflake-catching. He’d tilt his head back, stick his tongue out, and wait for the flakes to land. Watching him figure out the timing was like watching a kid at their first carnival game—pure determination mixed with just the right amount of adorable clumsiness. By the end, he’d turned it into a competitive sport, snapping at the air with precision that would make any snowflake think twice about falling his way.
As the afternoon wrapped up, Frankie’s energy started to wane. Snowflakes clung to his fur, and his eyes sparkled with that contented tiredness that comes after a day well spent. Frankie’s snow session was like taking a masterclass in living in the moment. Watching him barrel through drifts, pounce on invisible prey, or roll around with wild abandon, I’m reminded of the simple joy of being present. No second-guessing, no worrying about what comes next—just pure, unfiltered enjoyment of what’s right in front of us.
There’s a beautiful sense of wonder dogs have about snow. For them, every snowfall is like seeing it for the first time. It’s a reminder to look at the world with fresh eyes, to notice the extraordinary in the ordinary—even if that magic is just frozen water falling from the sky. It’s those opportunities to create joy, connect, and have fun…an invitation to loosen up, lean into what feels good, and maybe even make a few snow angels of our own (whether metaphorical or literal).
Because if there’s one thing dogs know better than we do, it’s that life is better when you let yourself enjoy it—snowflakes, cold paws, and all.
